CHYPS held its Convention this week in Warwickshire; the successful two day event took place against a back ground of uncertainty and cuts. It nevertheless gave participants a useful opportunity to network and learn about new ways of working. There was input from both Government and Partners; Baroness Ritchie, Chair of the Children & Young People Board for the LGA said in her speech that “we must protect and continue to provide great youth work for young people”
“Youth workers” she said “also play a key role in supporting young people who are outside of mainstream education. Youth work helps to negotiate alternative routes of entry into learning and work. The “youth work relationship” between workers and young people is key to re-engaging them.
She said, “Youth work is essential to meet the coalition government’s aspirations for young people”and that it shouldn’t be seen as a “luxury add-on”.
She went onto talk about the challenges facing local authority youth services and the role they will continue to offer.
