Policy Round-Up
As Parliament breaks for summer recess, the next few weeks provide a significant opportunity for CHYPS’ members to influence and shape national youth policy at a critical period for services and local authority budget-setting. This builds on CHYPS’ response to the education select committee inquiry, ministerial forum and CHYPS national policy seminar.
Government Youth Policy: Department for Education has published a series of short papers to guide discussion in key areas. The final report is expected towards the end of the year. CHYPS is involved directly in ministerial forum and meetings.
- Education Select Committee: The Government will respond formally to the select committee report on services for young people by the end of September 2011. It will provide an early steer to members and local authorities at a critical stage in the budget-setting cycle. CHYPS will build on its own submission to provide advice and guidance on the practical implications of this report and the Government response in September.
- The National Policy Seminar: Held for members by CHYPS on 16th this focused on what support young people need. That approach led to consideration of ‘entitlements’ for young people, in their transition to adulthood. The key issues discussed were: commissioning; early interventions; evidencing impact and outcomes.
CHYPS will be responding to the Government consultation on youth policy and taking forward members’ views to the main party conferences in September. The Annual Convention on 7-8th November will bring members together to hear first hand from the Minister Tim Loughton MP.
