Youth Offending: Early Intervention, Effective Rehabilitation
The violent disorder in August has sparked a national debate over the future of youth justice policies, with political and media discourse centred on developing effective methods of young offender management and rehabilitation, due to fears looming over a lost generation of youths and a diminishing sense of community and family morals.
In response, the government has recently designed a new assessment tool that requires the integration of health and children’s services in order to produce a wider understanding of the needs of young people, specifically taking into account the social and mental health issues that often accompany youth offending.
The new system replaces the current Youth Justice Boards ‘asset assessment tool,' and will reform the way in which services educate and rehabilitate children on remand, requiring a complete overhaul of offender rehabilitation processes.
With this in mind, Inside Government would like to invite you to attend 'Youth Offending: Early Intervention, Effective Rehabilitation,' taking place on Thursday 23rd February 2012, with key contributions from the Youth Justice Board, Ministry of Justice, Restorative Justice Council and Catch 22.
REASONS TO ATTEND:
- Hear about strategies to encourage young people to engage positively with their community through a rehabilitation revolution
- Discuss how to improve the prospects of young people through education and training opportunities
- Debate How the August's riots impact on the future youth justice policy?
- Understand the future funding opportunities for youth justice services
- Learn about the new practice standards for youth offending teams, probation and prisons
This discursive forum will address gang crime and gang prevention strategies and ways of involving young people in restorative justice approaches, offering delegates the opportunity to learn about new programmes to support young offenders into work and help young people at risk of falling into a cycle of offending.

Thinking Seriously about...Youth Work and Policy
Thursday 15 Mar 2012 - YMCA George Williams College, London
Youth and Policy's fourth 'thinking seriously' conference will explore current youth policy and consider its implications for the youth work field. The conference aims to bring together political, academic, managerial and practice perspectives for open dialogue about policy affecting young people and youth work.
Over recent months, many events have taken place with subsequent policy implications for youth work organisation and practice.
Following the implementation of Coalition spending cuts, the Select Committee on Services for Young People, and the riots of summer 2011, a conference to reflect on these events and their consequences in early 2012 is timely and useful.
We hope that the conference will present a challenge to practitioners, managers and academics to consider the new landscape, and how policy and practice might be better shaped in the light of evidence and experience.
